“The Last One” – Black Veil Brides

Toby drums a filler to provide a backdrop for Rey as he revs the crowd up for our next song—my song. I have cramp in my hand, or maybe the start of carpal tunnel. I’m not sure. I should get the pain checked out, but I don’t want to know the answer. So I numb my wrist post-show with creams and painkillers and hope once we get a break after this tour it resolves itself.

Yeah, smart, I know.

The crowd has come alive for the final push; a sea of moving bodies that surge up and down like the bars of an equalizer. I love it. I feel engaged. But I know I’m also flat, and it doesn’t take a genius to work out why.

I cut my eyes right and wait the seconds it takes for my sight to adjust to the light change. Henley stands there in the wings, arms folded across herself, hands rested on biceps as she watches the performance ready for anything. Knowing I have that kind of dedicated focus only for me? Yeah, I dig it.

Not that she needs to know that… yet.

“I wanna see those hands in the air!”

Rey’s cry brings me back to what the hell I should be doing—not ogling the help, that’s for sure. She thinks I run from fear, that I need her damn help because I’m scared.

Bullshit. I eat fear for fucking breakfast. All I need help with is how to unwind. That’s all.

And I’m going to damn well prove it to her.

Toby leads us into Cold Call; the first hammered note on Emery’s bass my cue to count in too.

And then… it all goes to hell.
